Theology: Meditations on Jonathan Edwards' "Christian Knowledge"

By Kyle J. K.

Preface: The following is a reflective meditation upon reading 18th century pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards' treatise, "Christian Knowledge." It discusses what we may know of God, his attributes as the one divine, infinite, eternal God, and how we ought to respond to such knowing by striving with all of our being to know and understand him as best we possibly may, in order to fulfill the purpose for which we were created - that being the glory of God - and, to exemplify in every aspect of our existence the image of God (imago Dei), according to which he created us, which consists of our capacity for reason, emotion, relationship, and the apprehension and appreciation of truth, justice, beauty, and the good. This is my axiomatic response to Edwards' words on the subject. Thanks!

Meditations on Jonathan Edwards' "Christian Knowledge"

It must be our principal endeavor, being creatures imbued with the image of the Divine, to improve in the perfection of excellence according to every faculty wherewith the Creator has endowed us; that is, in wisdom and truth of mind, in faithfulness of spirit, in fortitude of body, and in courage of moral character. In this doing, we verily become that distinguished likeness as which the Almighty himself so willed, in breathing into us his Spirit of life; that we may faithfully discharge that singular high purpose wherefore we were first made: to manifest and reflect before all heaven and earth the eternal and unblemished glory of God, which is the principle and end of all being.
